The Evolution of Combat Global Chat

Reasons for this post:

Okay, so this has been bothering me for sometime, even when I was playing RS. We have tried multiple times to recruit new members in-game, which has been relatively unsuccessful. This has seemingly started to have an impact on the Forum community now also, with the lack of new posts daily.

Goals of this post:

  • Establish if we want to develop the Global Chat community further
  • Where and How we are going to develop Global Chat away from Runescape

Our options:

    1. We can expand to different games
    2. We can continue being a closed community
    3. We can completely rebrand and lose the "global chat" (I.e. become a general forum)
    4. We can do nothing

What I would like from you:

    1. Vote in the poll at the top, it's multiple choice but only answer one from 1-4 and A-B
    2. Justify your votes by posting, such as; if you voted for 1. What games would you like to see?

Poor choice in naming it after the EOC. >.>

Anyway, my second option didn't appear to work properly, but I would say Option B.

I personally spend basically all of my waking hours in vent, either when I'm programming or just gaming, all of that time with others from Global Chat. While some of the people were never in Global Chat in RS, we still all consider them as a part of it. I suppose we could say that (while it happened a long time ago), this was the first step into that kind of change, as we had all started playing RS less by that time.

What I'm trying to get at here is that Global Chat is already beyond RS, what we're talking about is expansion. We have another choice to make here with this; do we A) expand to become a much larger gaming community group (I'm talking like the 100+ active member mark), or do be B) bring our closer friends from other game communities here and keep it a tighter nit community.

Edit: I said Option A, that was my mistake, I meant option B. I quite like the forums as they are currently. Structurally speaking that is, if we were taking the focus away from Runescape we would obviously have to change the main topics and such.

The Oceania cohort has already spread past RS and recruited many outside friends to Vent. It's just a matter of this happening on a greater scale.

My thoughts exactly on the name it base off EOC seeming as that failed.

Anyway, these are the two outcomes I predict what will happen. If we were to continue as we are as a close group small and occasional poster, the forums will eventually die out and as Shad's said somewhere else it might as well just become an image board.

If we expand and do get the proper recruitment and new members of up to 100+ some of us will have to do some real moderator work and call people out in proper fairness it'll be fun I suppose and Vent if that opens up to people will be populated by a lot of other people this could mean good or bad honestly.

I don't mind either way to be honest, I mean the first option causes us to inevitably die but it's not like I'll forget about the memories. The second would be alright as well and Global Chat would probably have a longer expiry date.

I agree with peng and invis that for a while now, even before most of us quit rs, we were interacting with other people on other games in vent/skype.

I also agree with War. If we were to continue being a small isolated community, it WILL eventually die out. I don't know about what you guys are doing in your lives right now, but i'm off to university in september and will be swamped with work from then on, so myself and potentially other members won't be around very often, which may be incentive to expand.

In terms of the forum dying out, we all keep in contact with each other one way or another; whether it be facebook or vent or what have you.

Another option as stated above was to expand to other games and start a huge forum following. The founders of the forum (obviously GC members) would have to monitor and participate in the activities and such, as War also mentioned.

Personally, i think it would be great to open up the forum and have many new, active members. If things don't work out, i'm sure things could be reverted.

Basically what i'm trying to say is that i would prefer option 1 or 3. Preferrably option 1 to begin and maybe option 3 later if we all like the way things are going.

To answer Owen's question, i'd say any games would be fine as long as we get a following.

Remove exclusive affiliations with Runescape and seek new members through personal invitation or advertisement. I've also mentioned that a GC imageboard would be awesome.

I'm not going to vote because I will do what everyone else feels is the right thing.

As you guys may or may not know, I know work for RuneZone developing guides and other bits and pieces and therefore my time has to be split up more. I still love you guys and you guys are still my number 1 priority.

I have noticed that the forums has become a lot quieter than usual recently. It might be that we do a complete reshuffle of the forum ranking system and expand out to other gaming platforms and category sections and move away from the dominance over RuneScape. If people would also like a brand new theme then I could start work on that as well I guess.

I was somewhat waiting for game suggestions.

I'm probably too busy at the moment to do anything with the website, and I wouldn't want to put that all on Van. <_<

The basic concept we've agreed on is that we cut down on the Runescape area and instead expand the other gaming category areas and try to have more competitions and interactive threads to keep people here right?

I think it's in Global's best interest to expand to other games, in fear of dying out even further...

As for the forum layout, I voted for both, feel free to hate me. If we're revamping our whole target area for the chat, a new layout would be refreshing, but at the same time, the forums already look amazing and generic enough to encompass other communities.
